I never thought The Office was very funny
SO many of my friends watch The Office and make references to it every time I'm around them. I've watched a few episodes, but honestly never got too into it at all. I'd chuckle at a few jokes, but everyone says it's the most hilarious show they've ever seen. I think it's because my sense of humor doesn't line up with the jokes in the show.

I think the series takes a hell of a long time to ramp up, season 1 is by far my least favourite so if you really want to give it another go either skip s01 entirely or just persist, alternatively if you're not interested, no one should be angry or disappointed in you for it, media is all subjective anyway.

Does it ever stop being based on awkward embarrassment humor? I've watched Parks and Rec and really enjoyed it, but I've tried watching The Office 3 separate times and can't make it past the first few episodes. All of the "humor" seems to revolve around the Steve Carell character being lonely and having no friends, or saying something embarrassing and everyone staring at him. I don't find either of those types of comedy to be even remotely funny. It's actually really uncomfortable for me to watch. It's not just not funny, it's anti-funny. It hurts to watch, and not in a good way. Does it even stop being that and turn into something more like Parks and Rec?

Season one of The Office and Parks and Recs are some of the worst TV seasons I've suffered through.
Although there are some episodes that just aren't funny. I love the show, but not every episode can be "THE BEST EVAR"
level 2
Yeah, season one is atrocious, it took me several times to get through it but now I've seen the show probably 8 times through.

I thought exactly what you are when I started the show.
In my experience the beginning is weak but it ramps up and gets good towards the middle. Eventually I thought the quality kinda started to go again but by then you're invested enough in the characters that it's still enjoyable.
I hear you that it's overrated, but after some time, I think it is a good show -- certainly above average.

More than likely yeah I could see why someone wouldn't like it. Just like I don't get all the hype around Game of thrones. I've watched a couple of episodes and just couldn't get into it

I actually just finished binging GOT (never saw it until about a month ago). I see where this is coming from. But shows like this aren't a "seen a couple episodes" type of show. If you're not into the story and characters and just watch a random episode or two it's not going to be anything. I usually have to give shows like this 4-6 episodes before I decide whether I like it or not.
I feel The Office is kind of the same... Not that you'd have to watch it from the beginning but if you're not familiar with the characters and just watch an episode it's just not going to grab you, since much of the humor comes from knowing character personalities and the interactions... And that takes watching a few episodes.

The first few episodes of GoT aren't that strong imo.
HBO originally declined the pilot -- told them to reshoot it.
After a bit though it ramps up and gets really good -- from there it's some of the best television I've ever seen through season 4.
After that the quality starts to suffer and season 7 was awful (they're past the books now).

The office is almost entirely cringe for me. Its so awkward that I'm uncomfortable watching it. So yeah, OP, I agree with you.
level 1
I agree wholeheartedly that the first season is the weakest. I think even more than that, you have to really know the characters and care about them to enjoy the humor, after all, it's almost entirely on an another character's expense.
I think it took me three tries of continued watching before I "got it ". I'd do yourself a favor and keep at it.
Arrested Development had a similar issue.

I have mixed feelings about that show. Both versions. My main problem being that the main focus of both shows a lot of the time is on Brent (UK) or Michael (US) who's theme is one of apocalyptic-level awkward self absorption. The secondary characters in both series are fairly funny, with the win IMHO going to the US version with Dwight Schrute. I think both versions could have been funnier if the managers were a little more realistically competent rather than so incredibly inept and insecure. Some of that is OK, but they're always turned up to 11...

I never really got the appeal either, but Creed is pretty funny. Though I do find random off the wall shit funny some days.

Give the original British version of The Office a chance. It's a lot darker and funnier than the American imitation, which is considerably watered down for American tastes.
level 2
I tried watching that show and I couldn't find the jokes.
level 2
Not OP but I tried watching the first few episodes of the British version and I just dont feel like I get it. Its something I may try again on, but I almost felt like there werent any jokes, like it was just a serious show with maybe a funny moment here and there.

I can't watch it because of the damn shaky cam. My god would it kill them not to hire a cameraman who is in a near permanent seizure?

I love it but I haven't rewatched 50% of the episodes more than once
